Youth trampled to death during Bonalu procession

Staff Reporter

Gesture of goodwill proves fatal

HYDERABAD: An 18-year-old youth was trampled to death by a group of persons during a Bonalu procession under the Saidabad police limits on Sunday.

According to the police, around 7.30 p.m., the victim -- P. Madhu, a resident of Vinay Nagar Colony in Chintalthota -- was standing outside his residence when the procession was passing by.

As the devotees were making their way to the nearby Mutyalamma Temple, some cables wires, which were hanging low obstructed their path. Due to this, some of the cables snapped and fell on the ground.

Madhu who saw the cables lying in the way of the procession went across and tried to remove them so that no one got injured.

However, the gesture was looked upon with suspicion by those in the procession, who surrounded him to enquire about the move.

Even as he tried to explain, some people in the procession who were reportedly drunk did not allow him to speak and allegedly manhandled him. In the melee, Madhu fell on the ground and was trampled upon by the crowd.

Upon seeing this, Madhu's family members rushed to his rescue. They rushed him to Osmania Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The Saidabad police have registered a case and taken up investigation. No immediate arrests were made. Madhu, son of Gokul Shanker Rao was working in Tirumala Electronics at Malakpet.
