KC(Jacob) merges with National Congress(I)

Staff Reporter

NC(I) to have local-level ties in civic polls

  • Formal declaration of merger on August 25
  • KC(Jacob) workers to be accommodated in NC(I)
  • Congress men welcomed to the party

KOCHI: The National Congress (Indira) has entered into electoral pacts in some civic bodies, including two Corporations, with like-minded parties, NC(I) leader K. Karunakaran has said.

Inaugurating a merger meeting of the Kerala Congress (Jacob) with the NC(I) here on Sunday, Mr. Karunakaran said the details of the pact, for the coming elections, would be released soon.

In his address, NC(I) president K. Muraleedharan also said the party would go in for local-level seat adjustments in the coming civic elections.

"Party candidates will contest the election on party symbol and not as independent candidates," Mr. Muraleedharan said.

The party will not adopt any `strategic stand' in the election, as was done by one of the constituents of the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) during the last panchayat elections. It will go in for seat adjustments with all like-minded parties in the election, he said.

The formal declaration of the merger will be made at the August 25 executive meeting of NC(I), he said.

Mr. Karunakaran assured Mr. Jacob that the workers of the Kerala Congress (Jacob) would be accommodated in the party. He said the NC(I) would not accept communal elements. However, party workers from the Indian National Congress will be accepted.

Mr. Muraleedharan said the NCI would establish itself as a force to reckon with in the September civic poll. He also demanded a CBI inquiry into the Kanichukulangara murder case to bring to book all those involved in the incident.

Mr. Jacob read out the one-line resolution to the effect of the merger between the two parties.

Mr. Karunakaran handed over the NC(I) flag to Mr. Jacob. Johnny Nellore, chairman, Kerala Congress (Jacob), attended the function.
