KOCHI: Judges are not above criticism in a democracy, writer M.K. Sanu said here on Sunday. He was speaking after inaugurating a one-day seminar on `Contemporary Court Verdicts and Social Justice.' Prof. Sanu said that the judges could always respond to the criticism through their highly responsible verdicts. The seminar was organised by a group of organisations involved in various social and environment protection activities. Environmentalist M.K. Prasad presided over the function. Medha Patkar, leader of the Narmada Bachao Andolan, sent a message to the seminar which said that the seminar is at an appropriate forum to voice the people's concern about judiciary's ideology and role in many a development issue. The message of V.R. Krishna Iyer, former judge of Supreme Court, was also read out on the occasion. C.R. Neelakantan, social and environmental activist, gave a gist of the number of judgements from 1997 onwards, starting from the ban on bandh, strike, hartal, Narmada issue, Coca Cola issue in Plachimada and the recent verdict on higher education by private institutions. A number of social activists participated in the seminar.
