Solar lamp for all houses soon

Staff Reporter

Kudumbasree scheme inauguration today

KOCHI: With the aim of providing a solar lamp to each of the homes in Kerala and turning the State into the largest user of solar energy in the country, a programme, titled Lifeway Solar Kudumbasree, will be launched here on Monday.

Women will be selected through the neighbourhood groups of the Kudumbasree Poverty Eradication Programme and will be given intensive training in making solar lighting equipment.

The Solar Kudumbasree units will have 10 members each. Canara Bank has set an example by offering to buy the first 10 solar lamps from the Kudumbasree units after offering to provide loan at 5 per cent interest for a period of five years with help from the Union Government.

The Solar Kudumbasree programme also aims to provide awareness about the use of solar lamps to the general public.

A press release from District Mission Coordinator for Kudumbasree Kabir B. Haroon said that although solar lamps have been around for about 15 years now not even two per cent of the people knew of the importance of using solar energy-powered lighting equipment.

The new solar light campaign will be launched at Lifeway Solar Training Centre, Azad Road, Kaloor, at 3 p. m., on Monday.
