THENI: The District Election Office here has deleted 45,000 voters' names from the draft electoral roll in the district. Sources in the district administration here on Monday said verification of applications received from voters in different parts of the district had been conducted following complaints from political parties in the Opposition on irregularities in inclusion of names. The District Election Office had received 55,681 applications from voters for inclusion of their names in the voter list in the second phase. After verification, the election office accepted only 10,633 applications and rejected 45,048 applications. At present, election officials had been preparing a list of voters who did not reside in the addresses mentioned in the voter list. An area-wise verification was on, the sources said. The officials also expressed the hope that the final electoral roll for the 2006 Assembly elections would be released on or before August 31. Of the total 9,07,272 voters in the district, 4,41,416 voters are men and 4,65,856 women. Voters identity cards had been issued to 5,54,007 persons in the district and 3,53,265 did not have voter identity cards. In terms of percentage, 61.06 per cent of voters had obtained voter identity cards and 38.94 per cent did not have them. Checking up of electronic voting machines used for the previous Lok Sabha polls in the district had begun on Monday, the sources said. Similar checkups had been on simultaneously in all 34 Lok Sabha constituencies, except South Chennai, Gobichettipalayam, Vellore, Sivaganga and Tirunelveli Lok Sabha constituencies, owing to pending of cases in courts. As per norms, respective district officials check all EVMs after one year from the date of the commencement of elections in order to rectify defects, if any, and keep them in perfect working conditions to use them in the next elections. Checking of 4,028 EVMs in the district would be completed within a week, the sources added.
