Kerala Samajam kick starts Onam celebrations

It has lined up a lot of events like sports, cultural, cooking for the festival

PONDICHERRY: It isn't the season for Onam as yet but the Kerala Samajam in Pondicherry has already kick started its celebrations for the 10-day festivities that happen during the `Chinga maasam' (August end to September end).

They have lined up a lot of events like sports, cultural, cooking, a photography competition and flower carpet competition.

This year Thiruonam falls on September 15 and already people are looking forward to celebrate it.

Though the first competition, the swimming event is already over, interested Malayalees can take part in the cultural competitions, which will be held at the Cluny Higher Secondary School in Lawspet on August 28.

Those who want to take part in sports can register before August 28 for indoor games including caroms, chess which will be held on August 28; shuttle badminton on September 11 for which registration is an hour before the competition at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Uppalam.

The best part of the Onam celebrations, the Kudumba mela, a day of family get-together with a traditional Onam feast and a variety of cultural programme will be on September 25 at Ananda Thirumana Nilayam and participation is by prior registration only.
