CHANNARAYAPATNA: President of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat Chandrashekara Patil has called upon people to protect Kannada from the hegemony of English. Inaugurating the district-level "Vachana Sahitya Sammelana" here on Sunday, he said the 12th Century social reformer Basaveshwara revived Kannada by tackling the threat it faced from Sanskrit. He fought for equality and started a social movement by providing place for every one in Anubhava mantapa. This brought about a revolution, he added. Jnanpith award winner Kuvempu wanted Kannada to be taught from the primary school level.
Confusion
However, the situation now has forced Kannadigas to pressure the Government to introduce Kannada from first standard, he said and added that introducing English from first standard will create confusion among students. Nallur Prasad presided over the convention.
