Letters to the Editor
The suspension of Madan Lal Khurana from the BJP was inevitable. When party president L.K. Advani was mired in the Jinnah controversy, Mr. Khurana tried to cash in on it. When that attempt failed, he suddenly realised how bad the post-Godhra riots of 2002 were and demanded that Narendra Modi step down as Gujarat Chief Minister. Mr. Khurana would have kept his credibility intact had he joined the Modi hatao chorus at the appropriate time or resigned in protest.
K.V. Seetharamaiah,
* * * Did anyone hear a whimper from Mr. Khurana over the riots for the past three years? He even sided with hardcore Sangh Parivar leaders, demanding Mr. Advani's scalp for his Jinnah-was-secular speech. Ironically, by asking for Mr. Modi's removal, Mr. Khurana has pleased neither the RSS nor Mr. Advani.
Ashok Kumar Rai,
* * * Why did the BJP not suspend Atal Bihari Vajpayee when he criticised Mr. Modi? Did he not openly admit that it was a "big mistake" not to have removed Mr. Modi following the 2002 Gujarat violence and that the riots hurt the BJP's prospects in the Lok Sabha elections?
V. Krishnakumar,
* * * That the architect of the Babri Masjid demolition finds it fit to praise the person morally responsible for the Gujarat riots is no surprise.
S. Lakshmi Narayanan,
