Admission quota

The Supreme Court judgment denying the government any right to prescribe quota for admissions to unaided, private colleges is unexceptionable in the law. All political parties, like spoilt children deprived of their candy, want to upset the judgment by amending the law. If the Governments really have in mind the interest of the oppressed, they can address the effect of the ruling by doubling the intake in all colleges under their control by introducing additional shifts. They can recruit additional staff. They can thus follow their reservation policy and bring competitive pressure on the unaided colleges.

Politicians are arguing that education is a service and should not be allowed to become a business. But are not politicians and bureaucrats public servants too? How service-oriented they are is too well known. The other important service sector is healthcare, which again is doing a roaring business.

Under the quota system, students admitted to free seats pay much less than those admitted to payment seats. Since the institutions have to meet their expenses only from the fees collected, they charge exorbitant sums for payment seats. Why should they subsidise those getting seats free, thanks to reservation?

The aim of the institutions, minority or non-minority, aided or unaided, is to disseminate education and not just earn money. The unfettered rights allowed to private institutions in admissions negate the noble cause.
