Amartya Sen's mother dies
SANTINIKETAN (WEST BENGAL):
Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's mother Amita Sen died here on Monday after a prolonged illness, family sources said.
She was 92 and is survived by son Amartya Sen and a daughter, Supurna Dutta.
Amita, who was known as "Ashram Kanya," wrote several books on Rabindranath Tagore and Santiniketan.
Her father, Acharya Khistimohan Sen, was inducted as a teacher at Santinikitan by Tagore.
Amita Sen's husband, Ashutosh Sen, a soil scientist, predeceased her in 1971. PTI

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee condoled the death of Amita Sen.
In a message to Prof. Amartya Sen, the Speaker said the void created by her passing away would be difficult to fill.
