NEW MEMBERS: CPI (M) leaders Brinda Karat and Sitaram Yechury coming out of Parliament House after being sworn in Rajya Sabha members on Monday.
NEW DELHI: : The Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders Sitaram Yechury and Brinda Karat and seven others on Monday took oath as members of the Rajya Sabha amid thumping of desks in the House. The others are: Suryakant Krupashanker Acharya, Surendra Motilal Patel, both Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ahmed Patel (Congress), Swapan Sadhan Bose (Trinamool Congress), Chittabrata Majumdar (CPI-M), Abani Roy (Revolutionary Socialist Party) and Arjun Kumar Sengupta (Independent). While Mr. Acharya and Mr. Patel took the oath in Gujarati, Mr. Yechury and Ms. Karat took the affirmation in English. Mr. Majumdar and Mr. Roy took the affirmation in Bangla and Mr. Sengupta in English. Mr. Ahmed Patel also took the oath in English. This was in the presence of Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhwat. Mr. Acharya, Mr. Ahmed Patel and Mr. Surendra Patel were elected as members from Gujarat, while Ms. Karat, Mr. Yechury, Mr. Majumdar, Mr. Roy, Mr. Bose and Mr. Sengupta represent West Bengal. Mr. Ahmed Patel, Mr. Abani Roy and Mr. Chittabrata Majumdar were re-elected.
