State-level basketball tournament

BANGALORE: Jayanagar Sports Club, for more than a decade now, has been amongst the top ten basketball teams in the state. In a bid to revive the declining interest amongst youngsters, the club has joined hands to conduct a State-level invitation basketball tournament at the Madhavan Park stadium courts from August 23 to 27.

The winner, from 16 teams in the fray, will get the JSC-Strides Challenge Cup and a cash prize of Rs. 15000. The club has one floodlit court and now thanks to the support of the local Corporator been able to install lighting for a second court as well.

Vijaya Bank with its enviable record continues to hold its top billing and is slated to meet the once famed HAL in the semifinals while the lower half boasts of two Army units — ASC and MEG — scheduled for a semifinal showdown, unless of course there is an upset. Host JSC is slated to meet State Bank of India in its first round. The first three days have four matches slated for the evening. — Sports Reporter
