Vatal Nagaraj stages protest

BANGALORE: Demanding urgent repairs to roads in his Assembly constituency, Chamarajanagar MLA Vatal Nagaraj squatted on a mat right in front of the office of the Minister for Public Works, H.D. Revanna, situated on the third floor of the Vidhana Soudha here on Monday. The Minister was not in the office at that time.

Mr. Nagaraj told presspersons that the roads maintained by the Public Works Department in his constituency had not been repaired and upgraded for over 10 years. — Staff Reporter

Case against ex-VC

MYSORE: Following directions from the Lokayukta, a case of corruption has been registered against the former Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University, S.N. Hegde, by Lokayukta Superintendent of Police S.D. Bellary.

According to sources in the Lokayukta office, Bangalore, the case against Prof. Hegde was filed under the anti-corruption law following a complaint from the former Syndicate member, K. Mahadev, who accused Prof. Hegde of circumventing the rules to provide affiliation to an educational institution in Mysore. — Staff Correspondent

Statue stable

New Delhi: The world's tallest statue of Lord Gomateshwara at Shravanabelagola is structurally stable and there is no need for further strengthening it, Minister for Information and Broadcasting S. Jaipal Reddy said on Monday. The monolithic statue is carved out of a single boulder and rests firmly on the bedrock, he told the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour.

Relief awarded

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday allowed a petition by a woman who said her husband had died while in police custody and directed the State Government to pay her compensation of Rs. 3.5 lakhs with 6 per cent interest per annum from 1996.

The Government was ordered to deposit the compensation amount in the court of the Civil Judge (Junior Division), Bangarpet, within four months of the date of receipt of the order.The court, in turn, was asked to place the amount for 10 years in fixed deposit in the joint names of the woman and her two children. The petitioner, Lakshmamma, said her husband, Gopalappa, was picked up on July 22, 1996 from their house by the Bangarpet policeon charges of stealing tomato seedlings from the field of Nanjappa. Gopalappa died on July 23 while in the custody of Bangarpet police. — Staff Reporter

Emergency landing

HUBLI: An IAF helicopter flying from Bangalore to Belgaum made an emergency landing near Hirehonnalli hillock in Kalghatgi taluk of Dharwad district on Sunday.

According to information, the helicopter, which was on a mission for searching the victims of the helicopter disaster in Belgaum district, had to make the emergency landing due to inclement weather. — Special Correspondent

Four held, weapons seized

CHITRADURGA: Police foiled a robbery attempt by arresting four persons in Hosadurga police station limits on Sunday.

An official press release said the four persons were trying to block vehicles by putting boulders across the road near Beerenakatte village in Hosadurga taluk. They intended to rob people by threatening them with weapons, the release added.

The arrested have been identified as Karibasappa, 21, Durgesh, 18, Shivanna, 20, and Manjunath, 19, — all residents of the same village. Ganesh, 18, another accused, is yet to be arrested, the official release said.

The police have seized weapons from the accused. — Staff Correspondent

BIDAR: The Association of Government Pre-University College Teachers felicitated meritorious students in Bidar on Monday.

Minister coming

BIDAR: Minister for Housing Anjana Murthy will review the performance of his department in Bidar district on Tuesday. He will arrive at 2 p.m. and hold a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office. He will later leave for Gulbarga, said a press release.

CMC office reopened

BHADRAVATI: The re-opening of the New Town office of the Bhadravati City Municipal Council here has been welcomed by the Late D Devaraja Urs Backward Classes, Dalit, Minority, Slum, Labour, and Women Welfare Committee. Now, the residents of Paper Town, Ujjinpura, Siddapura and Bommanakatte and other nearby areas can heave a sigh of relief.

They can now get birth and death certificate, khata and assessments copies, building constructions licences and so on from this office.

EDUSAT centre sought

Udupi: K. Raghupati Bhat, MLA, said on Monday that the State Government should set up EDUSAT training facility in Udupi as soon as possible.

He was presiding over the inaugural function of the audio-visual hall at the Government High (South) School here. Mr. Bhat said the Government has sanctioned EDUSAT training facilities for Udupi and Chamarajnagar districts. While Chamarajnagar has the facility, Udupi is yet to get one.

He said the salaries of the teachers were delayed.

Warning on sex determination test

MANGALORE: The district committee on preventing pre-natal sex determination test has taken serious view of the violations of the Pre-natal Sex Determination Prevention Act in Dakshina Kannada district and has asked all ultra sound machine owners to deliver the copies of records of investigations conducted in a month before the 5th of every month.
