Two pseudo naxals held

WARANGAL: Two pseudo naxalites were arrested by the Madikonda police while they were on their way to Hanmakonda from Hyderabad to extort money from a doctor and a liquor businessman, on Monday. The DSP (rural), K. Narayanan Naik told reporters that Md. Yakub (35) and Manda Srinivas (29) had so far extorted Rs. 2 lakhs from two persons in the city and Rs. 1 lakh was deposited in the form of Kisan Vikas certificates. Two threatening letters written in the name of "Prakasanna, district secretary, CPI (ML) PWG," were recovered from their possession. - Staff Reporter

Panel to examine ryots' suicides

KADAPA: Justice L. Ramachenna Reddy Commission will conduct an enquiry into cases of farmers' suicides and starvation deaths of handloom weavers in Kadapa on August 24, Collector G. Ashok Kumar said on Monday. Farmers' deaths between May 14, 2004 to May 11, 2005 would be probed into, he said in a statement. - Staff Reporter

Supplementary exams for engineering

KADAPA: Sri Venkateswara University has agreed to conduct supplementary exams for final year engineering students from October 3 following fruitful discussions with its Vice-Chancellor Jayarami Reddy, the KSRM College of Engineering Students Association leader V. Munaswamy said on Monday. Supplementary exams for final year engineering were scrapped in 2001-02 forcing students failing in a subject to lose an academic year, but students got them revived through a prolonged agitation. Students of first and second semesters of KSRM, NBKR and SVU Engineering Colleges can appear for the exams in October. - Staff Reporter

APERC's new regulation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) has notified a new regulation imposing certain conditions on running of other businesses by transmission and distribution licensees. It regulates the proportion of revenues from other business or businesses to be utilised for reducing transmission and wheeling charges as required under the provisions of Electricity Act, 2003. Under the APERC Regulation 2005, licensees intending to engage in other businesses have to furnish full details of the same to the Commission in advance and maintain separate accounts. - Special Correspondent

Lifer for murder

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Second Additional Sessions Judge K.V. Vijaya Kumar on Monday sentenced to life Edepu Lasmanna (42) of Agril village in Mudhole mandal and fined him Rs. 5,000 for killing his paramour. The prosecution conducted by Additional Public Prosecutor C. Mrutyunjaya proved that Lasmanna had throttled to death Neeradi Saraswati (35), his paramour on the intervening night of March 28 and 29, 2004 at her residence. - Staff Reporter

Reports denied

Hyderabad: P. Sambasiva Raju, chairman of the Committee on Ethics of the Assembly, in a statement here denied reports that the committee had submitted its report to the Speaker on the controversy surrounding the medical claims of Kaikalur MLA, Y. Raja Ramchander. Mr. Sambasiva Raju said the committee had met only once and had neither completed its enquiry nor come to the conclusion that Mr. Ramchander was guilty. - Special Correspondent

Fake currency note gang busted

KADAPA: The police busted a fake note racket by arresting four persons near Badvel RTC bus stand and seizing Rs. 1.50 lakhs worth of fake notes from them. G. Kodananda Naidu of Chittoor district, Nagesh and Bujjamma of Badvel and Hariswamy of Agrharam were arrested. - Staff Reporter

6 injured in clashes

Nellore: Six persons sustained injuries in various clashes in Nellore district on Monday.

While four persons were injured in a row relating to land dispute in Manchalapalli village of Anantasagaram mandal, one person was injured when he fell from a tractor at Penuballi village of Butchireddipalem mandal.

At Lebur village of Indukurpet mandal, one person sustained injuries, after he was attacked by rivals. The local police officials are investigating the cases.

KADAPA: CPI(M) activists staged a dharna before the Municipal Corporation office here on Monday demanding mitigation of acute scarcity in colonies inhabited by the poor. - Staff Reporter

Suicide bid by doctor

KADAPA: A doctor Araveti Nageswara Rao (52) attempted suicide by slashing both his wrists in his clinic in Christian Lane here on Monday. He attempted suicide due to depression arising from loneliness as his family members have been residing in Bangalore for three years, the police said. - Staff Reporter

Woman succumbs to burns
