CHERISHED GIFT: Minister for Panchayat Raj and Endowments J.C. Diwakar Reddy handing over house site pattas to the landless poor in Anantapur

ANANTAPUR: Minister for Panchayat Raj and Endowments J.C. Diwakar Reddy on Monday termed the land distribution scheme taken up by the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Government as unique, since it aimed at uplifting the landless poor by tying it up with other schemes, though land distribution was on since independence.

Absolute rights

Launching the second phase of the scheme in the district here, he said the beneficiaries were being given crop loans, seed subsidy, help for land development and assistance for livelihood activity along with the land.

The land was also being handed over to the beneficiaries in all respects by giving them title deed, pattadar passbook and draft sketch of the portion allotted to them.

Thus, the beneficiaries would have all rights on the lands given to them from day one, unlike mere possession in the past.

They were denied crop loans and other Government sops due to lack of title deeds in the past, he explained.

Total distribution

In all, 6,763 acres land would be distributed among 2,681 beneficiaries during the second phase and 37 per cent of the beneficiaries were Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, he said.

Of the land being given in the second phase, 2,008 acres was fresh land and 4,755 acres was already in the possession of beneficiaries. In the first phase, 9,000 acres was given to 4,000 beneficiaries.

Bankers thanked

Thanking the bankers for giving crop loans to the tune of Rs. 527 crores this year, he said that efforts were also on to extend another Rs. 100 crores soon.

The Minister also announced release of water to the tanks under Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir for rabi cultivation.

He also participated in the land distribution programmes at Dharmavaram and Penukonda. The District Collector Y.V. Anuradha, the Joint Collector Shashibhushan Kumar, the Zilla Parishad Chairperson G. Thippeswamy, the legislators B. Narayana Reddy, S. Sailajanath, K. Mohan Reddy and P. Keshav and several other officials participated.
