HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad regional round of The Hindu Young World Quiz attracted a huge turnout of students at Hari Hara Kala Bhavan here on Monday. With 513 teams including 115 outstation teams from 165 schools participating, the atmosphere was charged with zeal and competitive spirit. The battle of wits was between the quizmaster and teams, but the little ones among the audience too put up an impressive show. The final was an absorbing fare with six diverse rounds. The City Police Commissioner, V. Dinesh Reddy, who was the chief guest, complimented the students for their performance. Mr. Reddy and badminton star P. Gopichand gave away prizes. The questions ranged from epics, history, politics and commerce to industry, sports, science, art, films and wildlife. The team that seemed well informed about epics gained an edge over others.
Comic relief
And of course wild guesses from participants and tongue-in-cheek remarks from the quizmaster provided for some good laughs. After the preliminary round with 25 questions, six teams that made it to the finals were New Generation Junior College, Johnson Grammar School, Little Flower High School, Army School, R.K. Puram, Prathibha Junior College, and Gitanjali Senior School.
Prizes for grabs
Participants picked up loads of prizes too under various categories. A two-girl team from St. Francis Junior College for Women, walked away with the first prize in the Best Team Name category. `Peace unleashed - Let's become the channels of Peace' was coined by Swathi N, a visually impaired girl and her friend S. Rakshana. As Swathi made her way to the dais, guided by her friend, to collect the prize, they drew lusty cheers. Describing peace as light and strife as darkness, Swathi, made an appeal to the City Police Commissioner to bring in awareness in the society about merits of everlasting peace. Swathi said the credit for the team name went to all her college-mates.
Gopichand fan
She was thrilled to receive the prize from Gopichand and admitted that she was his fan. Nihar Gokhale and Tanush Vig of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kanchanbagh won the second prize for `Harry Potter and the two quiz blood wizards'. Md.Riyaz and Md.Amer Mohiuddin form Pragati Vidyaniketan High School won the third prize for `Young Nizams'. Eveready Batteries was the title sponsor and IQ topper, the associate sponsor.
