BANGALORE: In connection with Independence Day celebrations, Governor T.N. Chaturvedi felicitated five visually and intellectually challenged persons on Monday for their outstanding achievement in academics and sports at the Raj Bhavan Banquet Hall. N. Parimala, R. Prasad, K.S. Bhavya, Shiva Prasad Achar, and Raju Panadare received a cash award of Rs. 10,000 and a shawl each. N. Parimala, who is visually impaired, completed her B.A. from Bangalore University and is pursuing her M.A. in Economics from the same university. She is also a source of inspiration for many visually impaired persons in society. She is the daughter of Narayana Rao of Bangalore, said the citation. Twenty-three-year-old R. Prasad, though intellectually challenged, is an international-level athlete and has won several medals. He is also interested in dance, theatre, cycling and mountaineering. He is the son of Ramu of Bangalore. K.S. Bhagya, from a village in Hunsur taluk in Mysore district, is visually-challenged. However, she overcame the handicap and passed the SSLC examination with 76.9 per cent marks. She is currently in I year PUC in Maharaja's College, Mysore. She is the daughter of K. Siddachari. Eleven-year old Shiva Prasad Achar of Puttur is studying in the seventh standard. He won the gold medal at the eMitsubishi Impression Gallery Festival of Asian Children's Art Grand Prix held in Japan on July 27. His interest in oil painting, watercolour painting and poster painting depicting rural life are worth mention. He has been felicitate by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for his achievement. He is the son of Chandrashekar and Ms Nirmal of Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district. Raju Panadare, who is visually challenged, passed the SSLC examination with 81.92 per cent marks. His self-confidence and achievement is a source of inspiration to many visually challenged persons, the citation said. Chairman of the Legislative Council V. R. Sudarshan and officials of various departments were present.
