This Day That Age
The Lok Sabha, at the conclusion of a three-day debate on August 22, almost unanimously adopted Mr. K. Raghuramiah's motion "generally approving the recommendations of the Press Commission and requesting the Government to take steps to implement them as early as possible." The highlight of the debate was unquestionably the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Dr. B.V. Keskar's thoughtful speech, which most members regarded as outstanding for its clarity of thought and lucidity of exposition. His observations served to enable the members to assess the Press Commission's recommendations in the right perspective. Dr. Keskar categorically dissociated himself from the sweeping condemnation of the Indian Press indulged in by several speakers. The impression, he pointed out, which one would get from reading the report of the proceedings was that the entire Indian Press deserved to be condemned. He asked the members to note that there were a large number of good papers, though there might also be a number of bad papers. He read extracts from the Press Commission's report, wherein tributes had been paid to the high standard of Indian journalism. There were first class newspapers in India, Dr. Keskar pointed out, of which any one could be proud and he would, therefore, deprecate generalisation of the Press as a whole.
