dated August 24, 1955: Unrest in Morocco

French troops supported by fighter aircraft and tanks on August 22 went into action against Berber tribesman entrenched in hills above the razed town of Oued Zem. The fierce Berber warriors, many of them mounted, had swept down on the little town on August 20 to join the local Arabs in a bloody massacre of the European population. Under the weight of a determined Foreign Legion counter-attack, the Berbers fell back on their encampments in the hills, leaving dozens of dead on the battlefield. Several towns in French Morocco were still in a state of siege on August 22 after a weekend of rioting.
