Jenkins gets off the mark

NEW HAVEN: Scoville Jenkins, ranked 372nd in the world, won his first ATP match in three tries when he beat Jarkko Nieminen, ranked 55th, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of the Pilot Pen tournament on Monday.

"I was pretty nervous in the first set," said the 18-year-old American, whose first ATP match was against Andy Roddick in last year's U.S. Open. "I was excited (to win) but I know that this is only the first round."

His next opponent is fourth-seeded Tommy Robredo.

Jenkins was joined in the second round by compatriot Justin Gimelstob, who needed a third set tie-break to overcome Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in a thrilling night match on the Stadium Court. Gimelstob gave the crowd plenty to cheer about with a tight 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) win.

Elsewhere, for the first time in 12 matches, Cyril Saulnier was a winner as he defeated Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-2. Saulnier had not won an ATP match since reaching the second round at ATP Masters Series Monte Carlo in April. Saulnier broke the Swiss in the sixth game of the opening set, then again in the third and fifth games of the second set.

On the women's side, Meghann Shaughnessy advanced to the second round with a 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-4 victory over Nathalie Dechy.

The third set was tied 3-3 after each player broke the other's serve twice. Dechy took the next game, but Shaughnessy tied it by holding her serve without allowing a point.

Paes-Zimonjic lose

In the men's doubles, the top-seeded pair of Leander Paes and Nenad Zimonjic suffered a 6-4, 7-6(4) first-round loss to Tommy Haas and Jurgen Melzer.
