"Chai Pani Etc'' going places

It may not have set the box office on fire, but Manu Rewal's much talked about "Chai Pani Etc'' - which spent more time trying to open in theatres than the time it actually managed to stay put - is clearly going places.

Released in March this year after a seven-month-long struggle with the Indian Censors, the film is now all set to travel to the Montreal World Film Festival. To be held from August 26 to September 5, the festival will feature the movie in its "Focus on World Cinema'' section.

But that is clearly not the only good bit of news for Manu. The young Delhi-based film director is also on the jury of Festivals des Films du Monde, the Students' Film Festival-2005. To be held during the Montreal World Film Festival, it will feature 49 short films made by students of Canadian universities in the competition section.

Manu Rewal's film starring Konkana Sen, Zafar Karachiwala and Gaurav Kapur had run into trouble with the Censors for showing a woman smoking among other things. Set in urban India, the movie ironically enough had tried to portray the lives of India's youth today through the experience of a first-time film-maker's experience with the Censors. It had even been rejected for the National Awards because of Manu's Person of Indian Origin status.

With the controversy over his citizenship now behind him, this will clearly be a welcome break for Manu, and one that will let him not just show his work but also judge that of upcoming talent. — Lakshmi B. Ghosh
