NEW DELHI: A speeding truck coming from Ghaziabad ran over six men and three children while they were asleep on the foothpath near Hotel Hyatt Regency at Bhikaji Kama Place in South-West Delhi on the early hours of Monday. Six of them died on the spot, whereas three others were taken to hospital, one of whom later succumbed to his injuries. The injured were identified as Ram Kalash and Baij Nath, while four of the deceased were identified as Daleep, Nageshwar, Pramod and Sonu. The injured said the two girls and the boy, who were killed on the spot, were Sonu's children. The police are trying to trace their mother. The police said the deceased were labourers and were working at a construction site near Bhikaji Kama Place. The police have arrested the truck driver, Sadhu Sharan, who appeared to be in an inebriated state. He was taken to hospital for medical examination. "We are awaiting a report on the alcohol level in his blood at the time of the accident," said a senior police officer. In a similar incident, three persons sleeping on a pavement were killed while two others sustained serious injuries when a Tata 709 truck ran over them at JLN Marg near Ambedkar Stadium in the Darya Ganj area of Central Delhi in the early hours of August 18.The same day, a six-year-old girl was killed when she was run over by a speeding Tata 407 while she was taking a walk with her grandfather at Bawana in North West Delhi. On August 11, two persons were killed and another injured when a rashly driven truck rammed into another truck parked near the Libaspur drain.
Cop killed as truck rams motorcycle
Constable Gajendra Singh and Head Constable Rambir of Pandav Nagar police station were riding a motorcycle when a rashly driven truck hit them from behind on Nizamuddin Bridge around 11-15 p.m. on Sunday night. The truck driver sped away from the scene. The accident led to a massive traffic jam on the flyover. The injured policemen were rushed to hospital, where doctors declared Gajendra dead on arrival. Head Constable Rambir, who sustained injuries in the head and other parts of the body, was in a stable condition on Monday. He told the police that he and Gajendra were going to get their motorcycle's fuel-tank filled when the truck hit them from behind. While the police have registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving, they are trying to trace the killer truck.
