U.P. has no additional water to share: Mulayam

Lord Indra alone can quench Delhi's thirst, says CM

LUCKNOW: Denying allegations that he was politicising the water sharing issue, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday said: ``Lord Indra'' alone could solve the matter, by ushering rains in the State that had no additional water to share with Delhi.

The Chief Minister's comment came at a press conference here a day after Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit alleged that UP was ``politicising'' water by not releasing the required amount to her State.

Mr Yadav said the State had no additional water to share with Delhi. ``You must pray to Lord Indra for more rains...then only can we provide additional water to other States,'' he added.

The Samajwadi Party supremo added that his hometown of Saifai too was under an acute grip of water crisis. ``People there are facing an unprecedented water scarcity,'' he said.

Interacting with newspersons here on Monday, Ms Dikshit said even after several assurances, the U.P. Government was yet to release 300 cusecs of water to Sonia Vihar Water Works, which was essential for ensuring adequate drinking water to the Delhites.

Three-member panel

In the face of mounting criticism, the Mulayam Government on Tuesday set up a three-member committee to probe alleged irregularities in allotment of residential plots by the Lucknow Development Authority.

Headed by the Chief Secretary, the committee had been asked to submit its report within three days, the Chief Minister told reporters in New Delhi .

``I have constituted an inquiry team, headed by the Chief Secretary'' to inquire into allotment of plots, Mr.Yadav said.

He said action would be taken against those found guilty. UNI/PTI
