Bandh paralyses normal life in Nainital

NAINITAL (UTTARANCHAL): Normal life in this tourist town remained paralysed on Tuesday following a shutdown to protest the Uttaranchal Government's decision to shift some forest department offices from here and handing over their buildings to the State High Court.

All school, colleges, markets, banks, cinema halls and petrol pumps remained closed during the day-long bandh called by employees' unions of various State Government departments. The agitated forest department employees, led by local MLA Narayan Singh Jantwal, took out a procession against the State Government and later submitted a memorandum, addressed to President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Uttaranchal Governor Sudarshan Agarwal and Chief Minister N D Tiwari, to the district administration demanding withdrawal of the decision. "These offices were set up here in the British period and even the erstwhile Uttar Pradesh Government never tried to shift them. The order will also adversely affect the economy of the town,'' Mr. Jantwal said. PTI
