SAI (Madikere) in final

BANGALORE: Sports Authority of India (Madikere) defeated BEL Colony Youth Association 2-0 in the semifinals of the State women's hockey championship at the hockey stadium here on Tuesday. In a bitterly contested match which saw some of the ladies of the two teams beat each other up with hockey sticks five minutes before the scheduled close of play, Shruthi scored first in the 24th minute and C.J. Leelavathi netted the next one a minute later.

The match turned ugly in the final moments after umpire Padmanabhan gave a red-card to BCYA player Shwetha for foul play resulting in bleeding injuries to a SAI player. Her team-mate claimed she was guilty of rough play and not Shwetha and abuses were hurled all around. The umpire had to flee from the charging players as play was held up for some time.

Earlier in the first semifinal, Sports Hostel (Mysore) beat Sports Hostel (Kudige) 4-0. Impa (6th), Munirathnamma (39th and 58th) and Aruna (44th) scored for the winner.

Sports Hostel (Kudige) will play BCYA for the third and fourth place on Wednesday morning while SAI (Madikere) will clash with Sports Hostel (Mysore) for the title at 4.30 p.m.

Surana triumphs

Surana College won the Bangalore South inter-collegiate hockey tournament trophy at Bangalore recently. In the final, Surana defeated S.B.M. Jain College 2-0. Reo Raymond and Aiyappa scored for the winner.
