Siddarth springs a surprise

CHENNAI: Siddarth Hande has taken a year's break from studies. Having completed his Std. XII in Biology stream this year, the 17-year-old Chennai lad has decided to focus on tennis for the time being with the approach "let's see how it goes."

In the boys' under-18 second round of the adidas-Madras Cricket Club-AITA National junior tennis championship at the club courts here on Tuesday, Siddarth, unseeded here, convinced himself he's on the right track with a clinical 6-1, 6-1 win over the top-seeded Harika Gursher Singh of Chandigarh. Siddarth will take on Siddharth Alapatti of Andhra Pradesh next.

Meanwhile, in his capacity as the Junior Selection Committee Chairman, 67-year-old Akhtar Ali, former India Davis Cup coach, will pick around eight boys and eight girls (between 14 and 16 years) from the ongoing championship. He will have a camp for the selected players and then chart out a programme for them.
