VISAKHAPATNAM: Panchavati Township, a housing project of VUDA at Akkireddypalem, does not fall under the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) purview since the project cost, population or quantity of sewage water are less than the prescribed limits of the EIA notification, says a communication from Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority. "EIA is mandatory for a housing project if its cost is more than Rs.50 crores, if the population exceeds 1,000 and if the sewage discharge is more than 50,000 litres a day. This project---with 176 houses and a population of 880 at the rate of five persons per house---costs only Rs.39.03 crores. Sewage disposal of 44,000 litres a day is less than the EIA stipulation. Hence the project does not require EIA clearance," says the VUDA release.
