Corporation draws up infrastructure proposals

Special Correspondent

NURM will be implemented, says Commissioner

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore Corporation on Tuesday announced that it would send proposals for Rs. 543.30 crores to the Union Urban Development Ministry for infrastructure development in the city under the National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM).

Approval

Listing out 27 schemes, including the pending underground drainage and Pilloor drinking water projects, the Corporation said that these would be placed before the Council on August 29 for approval.

"We are on the job of sending these proposal," the Corporation Commissioner, Anil Meshram, said.

Development

The Corporation had included all key schemes that would bring development to the city.

While 50 per cent of the funds would come from the Ministry, the local body/State Government's contribution would be 20 per cent. The rest would come as loans from financial institutions.

A boon

If the Ministry cleared the proposals, it would come as a boon to the Corporation in funding two major projects - the Rs.108-crore Pilloor second phase water scheme and the Rs.199-crore underground drainage scheme.

(Under the drainage scheme, Rs.168 crores was the estimate for zones IV, V and VI and the rest was for carrying out pending works in the first three zones. The proposed Pilloor scheme would supply 125 million litres a day to the city.)

Significantly, the Corporation planned to build five flyovers to ease traffic congestion.

The areas identified were: 100 Feet Road-Sathyamangalam Road Junction, Big Bazaar Street-Oppanakara Street, Lakshmi Mills Junction, Avanashi Road and Kamarajar Road Junction and Ramanathapuram Junction.

Subways at Ukkadam and Gandhipuram, already proposed in the Corporation's budget, were also included in the NURM proposals. The other major projects were: multi-level parking facility at T.K. Market, improvements to the Vellalore compost yard, construction of a zoo at Kavundampalayam, solid waste management and storm water drains.

Improvements to congested bus stands were also included.
