Two killed, 23 hurt as bus, lorry collide

Accident on Tiruchi -Madurai national highway


TIRUCHI: Two bus passengers, including a woman, were killed and 23 others injured in a road accident involving a state transport corporation bus and a trailer lorry on the busy Tiruchi - Madurai national highway near Nagamangalam, a few kilometres from the city on Tuesday evening.

The victims have been identified as Devi (30), who was a bank employee and Kandasamy (55) of Kavarapatti. The accident occurred when the bus on its way to Tiruchi from Madurai collided with the lorry, which was coming from the opposite direction carrying long iron girders.

The iron girders in the lorry pierced the body of the bus and came out through the other side killing one of the passengers seated inside the bus.

The front portions of both the bus and lorry were completely damaged in the accident, which occurred at around 4.45 p.m. Among the injured were the bus and lorry drivers and 11 women.

The injured, who were in shock, were admitted to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government General Hospital here for treatment. Some of the passengers sustained injuries on their head and legs. The bus driver, Murugaian, has been admitted to a private hospital here.

On receiving information about the accident, the Superintendent of Police, N.K. Senthamaraikannan, and other senior district police officials went to the spot and conducted enquiries. The services of the Fire and Rescue Services personnel were utilised to pull out the iron girders that had pierced the bus. The Ramji Nagar police have registered a case.

It was only on Sunday that three persons were killed in a road accident involving a car and a state express transport corporation bus on the Tiruchi - Madurai national highway near Thuvarankurichi in the district.
