MADURAI: An alert policeman averted female infanticide, rescuing a baby girl from a woman here on Wednesday. The head constable, R. Arockiam, attached to the Vilakkuthoon police station, was patrolling the Obulapadithurai area this evening when he saw an old woman moving in a suspicious manner along the Vaigai riverbed. She was carrying a small bundle and was trying to dump it into the slush. Suspecting a foul play, Mr. Arockiam intercepted the woman and took possession of the bundle, which contained a three-day-old baby girl. The accused, T. Thangam (40), of Kamarajapuram, confessed that the infant was born to her daughter, T. Muneeswari, in the Government Rajaji Hospital on Saturday. Since Muneeswari already had a daughter, the family had decided to "do away" with the newborn. A case of `attempt to murder' was registered against Thangam who was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar, has announced a cash award to the head constable for his timely action.
