TIRUCHI: : The Department of Biotechnology of Bharathidasan University, in association with the Business Development Centre of the varsity, will offer tissue matching consultancy services for kidney transplantation. With the number of patients suffering from renal failure increasing and kidney transplantations being done in speciality hospitals, the university has established a new facility at the Department of Biotechnology for matching donor and recipient. The facility would cater to the needs of patients, nephrologists and surgeons in the region. The matching process would involve testing the serum of the patients for lympho-cytotoxicity against the donor's lymphocytes. The tissue-cross-match along with HLA typing are considered essential for selecting the donor in transplantation medicine, a university release said. The consultancy service would be offered by K. Balakrishnan, a faculty member, and an immunologist trained in the particular area of specialisation. Hospitals, government and private, medical and health care professionals could contact Dr.Balakrishnan, Senior Lecturer, Department of Bio-Technology (telephone:0431-2407086/e-mail: immunobala@rediffmail.com), or M.Krishnan, Director, Business Development Centre of the varsity (telephone: 0431-2407088/e-mail:krish14156@yahoo.com) for further details, the release added.
