KOCHI: The Thiruvananthapuram Division of Southern Railways will take up Rs. 12 crore worth projects for both Ernakulam South and North railway stations. This was announced by Thomas Varghese, General Manager, Southern Railways, while interacting with the media after inauguration of the new foot-overbridge at Ernakulam South Railway Station on Wednesday. He also inaugurated the platform ticket vending machine at Ernakulam North Railway Station and laid the foundation stone for a full-rake unloading facility at Cochin Harbour. The latter is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.24 crore. The proposed works include renovation of South railway station to a model station building (Rs. 65 lakh), new foot-overbridge at Ernakulam South (Rs. 63 lakh), water supply scheme at South (Rs. 8.1 lakh), multi-purpose enquiry system at South (Rs. 20 lakh), raising of platform and construction of platform shelter at North (Rs. 55 lakh), improvement of circulation area at North (Rs. 25 lakh) and improvement of lighting at North (Rs. 5 lakh). Another Rs. 10 crore has been earmarked for construction of additional platform and circulating area at both the railway stations, which also includes the cost for land acquisition. Both the railway stations feature among 17 stations where Unreserved Ticketing System and touch-screen facilities are being proposed. Mr. Varghese inspected the building constructed by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) at the eastern entry to Ernakulam South Railway Station. The Authority has completed the 40,000 sq.ft. building on a 2.2-acre plot on the eastern side of the railway station as part of its traffic easement project. Only the ground floor has been handed over to the Railways and Authority will rent out the three top floors. Mr. Varghese also held discussions with Antony Isaac, Chairman, GCDA. "The Railways has agreed to take up projects like extending the new foot-overbridge to outside the station so that the people on eastern side could easily move across the station and construction of an overbridge at Saleem Rajan Road on deposit work basis. The formal inauguration of the eastern entry will be made in a couple of months. The GCDA needs to prepare the parking lot also," said Prof. Isaac.
