Consumers plan march to High Court

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Consumer organisations, under the banner of `Save Consumer Courts Action Council,' will march to the High Court on September 7, appealing that the High Court intervene to ensure the proper functioning of consumer fora in the State and to fill the vacancies in the fora.

General convener of the Council A. Ayyappan Nair pointed out that the district consumer disputes redressal forum at Malappuram has not been functioning since January 2004, as there is only one member.

Although the Consumer Protection Act stipulates that there should be three members in each forum, all district consumer disputes redressal fora and the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission are functioning with just two members.

At the Kollam district forum, when one of the members retires after their stipulated period of service, this forum will have to be closed down.

None of the consumer fora in the State are functioning as per the law.
