Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Tehelka on Wednesday accused the Gujarat police of trying to browbeat journalists and muzzling press freedom. Reacting sharply to the Anti-Terrorist Squad of the Gujarat Police summoning its correspondent for questioning on a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Babu Jamnadas Patel, Tehelka's Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal said it was a move ``clearly designed to harass and intimidate'' the journalist. In a statement, Mr. Tejpal said the correspondent, Mahesh Langa, had been accused of threatening the MLA. According to Mr. Tejpal, the fact was that Mr. Langa was trying to contact Mr. Patel for his version on a land scam story he was following. "The matter assumes serious proportions because this kind of complaint could be brought against any journalist asking for a version. Moreover, the fact that the matter has been referred to the Anti-Terrorist Squad speaks for itself. It is unprecedented in this country that a journalist doing his work in normal course should be summoned before such an agency.''
