The National Highway 47 stretch between Walayar and Thrissur have seen better days. However, for the last couple of months, the condition of the roads has become so bad that accidents are a regular feature on the stretch. The road is damaged at a distance of almost every 10 feet, making it difficult to travel, especially for light-vehicles and two-wheelers. During rain, there were so many accidents involving light vehicles and two wheelers. Yet there is no move by the authorities to repair the road. The reason is that the NH engineers stationed in the district are authorised to spent only Rs.25,000 for repair work. A paltry sum indeed. Another reason, the officials said, was that since the roads were taken over by the newly formed National Highway Authority it was the latter's responsibility to repair the damaged roads. But the authority has not come into force at the district level and the existing set-up is not functioning. Thus there is virtually no one to take care of the NH roads.
