Khadi goes chic

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Khadi is going chic to meet new demands from young customers and people who have experienced the quality and beauty of products from talented artists in the remotest corners of India.

From Kerala to Delhi, people are demanding new products and new experiences from what have been broadly and traditionally been described as Khadi products.

During the ensuing festive season, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) hopes to catch the festive mood in a manner that is entirely fresh and innovative.

The KVIC represents thousands of traditional artisans from villages all over India, who put in their best to bring out products of great beauty and quality.

B. B. Girimath, Deputy Director, Khadi Gramodyoga Bhavan, said that the exclusive handicrafts exhibition that is on now include Sheesham wood carved and inlaid articles, aluminium arts ware, gun metal and rosewood Mandapam and Meenakari carved items.

Besides these, a large collection of Khadi dress materials is also on display. This includes cotton and silk items.

Care has been taken to source products directly from the artisans so that middlemen are avoided and prices are kept at the reasonable levels allowing good remuneration to the artisans.
