Trains in these parts of the world always run behind schedule, is the general refrain. So when the new general manager of Southern Railways promised to meet the media on Wednesday, not many scribes expected the press meet to start on time. However, the scribes who came just in time for the function were surprised to find it already under way. Thomas Varghese, being the first Malayali general manager in the last 23 years, had much to announce. There is much to be done for improving the service rendered by the railways in the State, he told the media. Meeting schedules would be one among them. More stoppages for existing trains, more short-distance trains and increased security measures must be taken up.
