THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A new toilet pan to be used in setting up dry composting toilets has been brought out by a Thiruvananthapuram-based NGO `EcoSolutions' that promotes eco-friendly approaches to sanitation practices. At a press conference here, its director, Paul Calvert, pointed out that flush toilets use up a huge amount of water and empty their waste into soak pits or septic tanks, thereby polluting ground water. Dry composting toilets on the other hand, starting with initial separation of urine and faecal matter, sanitise the excreta by converting it into nutrient-rich dry compost. Thus there is no generation of sewage. The separated urine serves as a very good fertilizer that can be used to grow vegetables and other plants in a home garden.
