Though the team from Silver Hills HSS, Kozhikode won the Kozhikode edition of The Hindu-Young World Quiz 2005 held on Wednesday, it was the audience comprising students of teams who were left out in the preliminary rounds that stole the show by answering most of the questions and taking back home a number of prizes.

The quiz in Kozhikode, which was placed in the map of Young World Quiz for the first time this year, turned out to be an exciting affair as participating teams enjoyed every moment of the nearly four hours of quizzing.

Two hundred and seven teams from 85 schools from the districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad and Palakkad participated in the preliminary round. The quiz began with a question so familiar with the people of Kozhikode - name the place where Vasco da Gama landed near Kozhikode. But some of the questions were not so simple, like writing in Roman numerals the year when Vasco da Gama reached the shores of Kozhikode.

Only six of the teams made it to the finals after the 217 teams battled it out over 25 questions in the preliminary round.

The interactive session held in between the preliminary round and the final round with the questions asked in the preliminary round being left to the participating teams to answer turned out to be a time of real fun.

One question was - who is the Robin Hood of North Malabar? It had the students coming up with funny answers like Kayakulam Kochunni, Pazhassi Raja, Kunhali Marrikkar and Velu Thampi Dalawa, until one of them came up with the right answer "Thacholi Othenan".

The question "what R in A.R. Kumble (Anil Kumble) stands for" led to students resorting to wild guesses and coming up with a host of incorrect names.

The audience had a few lighter moments when participants in the final round were asked to press of the buzzer to familiarise themselves with operation of buzzer.

Lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, who was the chief guest on the occasion, distributed the prizes to the winner.
