ERODE: Kalingarayan farmers have sought compensation from the Government for the losses suffered due to release of contaminated water by tanners and dyers. The urgent meeting of the Kalingarayan Canal farmers was held on Wednesday. The meeting, presided over by president V.M. Velayutham, said that on August 12, tanners and dyers discharged huge quantity of contaminated water into the Kalingarayan Canal and it affected several standing crops like turmeric and onion.
`Shift tanneries'
As farmers incurred heavy losses, the Government must grant Rs. 10,000 per acre as compensation to those affected, the meeting noted. The meeting wanted the Collector to instruct all tanners and dyers to shift to Perundurai SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre.
