BJP seeks Rs. 1,000-crore Central aid for flood relief

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly B.S. Yediyurappa said on Thursday that party State unit President Jagadish Shettar and he will visit New Delhi on August 29 and urge party MPs to pressure the Centre to sanction at least Rs. 1,000 crores immediately for flood relief work. They will call on the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and BJP President L.K. Advani and apprise them of the flood havoc. He said the Centre and the State have failed to undertake relief operations and even the sanctioned funds are yet to be made over to the districts concerned. Of an estimated loss of Rs. 3,200 crores, the Centre should chip in with at least Rs. 1,000 crores immediately.

Mr. Shettar said senior leaders of the party will tour the districts next month and address party workers convention. The BJP will organise a backward classes rally in Bangalore in October.
