TIRUCHI: Coin box telephones can be seen everywhere in front of shops. They are patronised well by the shopkeepers as they serve a double purpose. These telephones, which though they require an investment of a few thousands of rupees for installation and connection, spare the shopkeepers from paying monthly telephone bills while at the same time serving the public. The commission that the shopkeepers get from the revenue netted through calls made by the public is bound to be more than the amount they would incur for making calls themselves. Naturally, they have no hesitation in replacing their old phones with the coin box phones. Of course, they themselves have to insert coins to make outgoing calls. But, they feel that it is worth the trouble. The obvious reason is that they are spared the ignominy of letting visiting friends and wellwishers make free calls. And, the system allows them to get incoming calls as usual.
