Vandana in the van; Rani wins bronze division

Special Correspondent

Chennai: Kolkata's Vandana Agarwal moved to the top spot with 225, gaining a three-stroke lead over Irina Brar and Shradanjali Singh after three rounds of the Madras Ladies golf championship at the Cosmo-TNGF course here on Thursday.

It was Mysore's Bhavna Shetty, though, who registered the day's best score of one-over 73, which could have been one-under had she not double bogeyed the last hole. Bhavna birdied the fourth and sixth holes.

Vandana parred the first nine, but went four-over on the back nine to finish with 76. She had birdies on the sixth and 11th holes, but four bogies and a double bogey did not help her cause. Yet, on a day of ordinary scores, Vandana's 76 gave her the lead.

Irina shot birdies on the 12th and 18th holes, but a triple bogey on the seventh apart from three other bogies saw her card four-over 76. The Chandigarh girl is level with Jamshedpur's Shradanjali, who returned 79, undone by three double bogeys. Mysore's Sonam Chugh and Sharmila Nicollet of Bangalore, in the first and second places after day two, scored 82 and 81 to slump to the fourth spot. Chennai's Lalitha Balasubramanium, with an aggregate of 232, is in the top six. Rani Chadda (Chennai), with 298 (gross) and 223 (nett), won the bronze division that concluded on Thursday. Aditi Mehta (Pune) finished runner-up, tallying 309 and 231.
