CHENNAI: In its advertisement, UC MAS proclaims in encouraging words, "It takes no genius to be a genius". And now, the company is ready to prove its point with its first All-India UC MAS Memory Technique Competition. The programme teaches memory techniques, mental mapping and speed-reading and is for those aged 12-20. Teacher-trainer Vijayprabha Annamalai explains that this is the age where there is a change in an individual's life pattern - from a student to someone on the threshold of his or her career. The competition is scheduled for August end and is open to all students who have undergone the UC MAS Memory Technique Programme. About 400 students are expected to participate from nine States where UC MAS has a presence. Students learn how to remember lessons and passages by arranging information in sequential order, converting text into diagrammatic representations (memory mapping) and speed-reading. The course has four levels that take three months each. Classes are held once a week for two hours a day. There is also a two-and-a-half months crash course. The course is also supposed to hone creativity as "the imagination needs a bit of training," said Ms Annamalai. Chairman-managing director of the company Basheer Ahamed announced that UC MAS would shortly be starting the programme in Tamil and other regional languages. The competition will be held at 9 a.m. on August 28 at Yeses Royal Mahal, Anna Nagar West. Kishore Kumar, senior principal of St John's International Residential School, Chennai, and J. Uma Maheshwari, director of matriculation education, will participate. The afternoon session will feature a demonstration of "extraordinary memory feats" by participants.
