Council demands separate legal system for Kodavas

Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI: Secretary-general of the Codava National Council N.U. Nachappa, who has been fighting for an autonomous homeland status for the Kodavas in Kodagu, on Thursday urged the Union Government not to bring Kodavas under the purview of the proposed amendments to the Hindu Succession Act, which has been put forth in the monsoon session of Parliament.

In a statement here, Mr. Nachappa said Kodavas are a tribe with a racial background and they should not be termed Hindus. He said the supreme gods of the Kodavas are their ancestors called "Guru Karona". Their way of life, religious practices and language differ from those of other communities that follow Hinduism, he added.

He said the Centre must enact a separate legal system for the Kodavas on the lines of the Hindu law and the Islamic Sharia. Any change in the Hindu Succession Act should not be applied to Kodavas, Mr. Nachappa said.
