Over now to the new digital age...

STATE-OF-THE-ART: Tower B of Doordarshan Bhavan, enveloped by a five-storied structure, houses the largest studio spread over 600 square metres

They may have always worked in the customised way, but joining the digital revolution now are All India Radio and Doordarshan. With the inauguration of the New Broadcasting House and Tower B of Doordarshan Bhavan this week by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Jaipal Reddy, the country now boasts of the biggest broadcasting studio in Asia-Pacific.

The new Broadcasting House on good old Mahadev Road will be used by AIR home services, News Services Division and the External Services Division. It has 26 fully automated state-of-the-art transmission studios with all recording, editing and playback equipment, including mixing consoles and master routers to be in the digital mode.

For the first time in AIR's 75 years of existence, the newsroom here will go paperless as the news services division has shifted to a digital newsroom. With the news changes, the audio quality of news too will improve as it will be recorded on hard disc, instead of the decade-old tape spools, and transmitted digitally.

And while the Broadcasting House will mark AIR's entry into the digital age, the Doordarshan Bhavan— Tower B, built on a budget of Rs. 82 crores, will bring new technology to the national headquarters of Doordarshan.

An eleven-storey octagonal structure, enveloped by a five-storied structure, has the largest studio spread over 600 square metres. Conceived by Raj Rewal and Kuldeep Singh Associates, the designs for the buildings were selected through a national competition, with the post-production facility and extensive computer graphics facility. -- LAKSHMI B.
