Petitions against green tax levy dismissed

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court dismissed a batch of over 3,500 writ petitions challenging the levy of green tax and life tax for vehicles in Tamil Nadu, ruling that the State Government was well within its limits to specify a percentage of the value of the vehicle as life tax. A Division Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice A.R. Ramalingam dismissed the petitions saying, "the levy of motor vehicle tax as a percentage on the cost of the vehicle is neither arbitrary nor discriminatory in character."

Upholding the levy of lifetime tax for new registration of vehicles and green tax for certain category of vehicles, the Judges concluded that the contention of the petitioners that the levy had no relevance or nexus to life-time tax could not be accepted.
