Weeping woman causes flutter, is consoled by Chief Minister

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A poor farm worker caused a mild flutter at the State-level SHG meet held at the Nehru indoor stadium when she attempted to reach out to the dais out-of-turn and narrate her tale of woe to the Chief Minister. Even as K. Kathammal of Vikramangalam village, Madurai district, a member of Pudumalar SHG, attempted to climb the steps, she was whisked away by police personnel. On seeing the woman in tears, the Chief Minister asked the officials to bring her to the dais. Kathammal, mother of two children, fell at her feet and submitted a petition seeking assistance. A visibly moved Ms. Jayalalithaa consoled her, who was married to a physically challenged person. Her efforts to run a petty shop with loans provided by the SHG had failed. Being the only breadwinner, she found it difficult to nurture the family with a meagre daily wage of Rs.25, she said.
