`Beauty contest' on rails

NOVEL PAGEANT: Refurbished diesel locomotives which took part in the contest.
CHENNAI:
It was a "beauty contest" with a difference. For a change, there was no parade of beautiful women. The only things on display were refurbished diesel locomotives.
The diesel loco sheds at Ernakulam, Erode, Golden Rock and Tondiarpet had sent in their entries for the contest conduced by the Southern Railway in Erode on Sunday.
The design parameters for the "contestants" included better illumination inside the cabin, focussed lamps, revolving chairs for drivers, anti-skidding floor mat and facilities for trouble-free driving.
The judges— senior mail drivers and loco inspectors from the Southern Railway headquarters — selected the locomotive from Golden Rock as the winner.
It had many special features, including a water-filling facility in the loco extension tank that could be operated by the driver from inside the cabin itself. Normally, drivers have to climb on to the locomotives, which is prohibited.
Locomotives are periodically sent to the sheds for overhaul. During this, additional facilities are added, based on the feedback from drivers.
Encouraged by the success of the contest, the Southern Railway has decided to make the show an annual affair.
