Tourist inflow into picks up

  • Buoyant growth predicted for 2005-06

    PONDICHERRY: : Tourist flow to Pondicherry has been good in the past few years, pushing up the revenue and foreign exchange earnings by 20 per cent, according to a study. The study, conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry at the end of April this year, revealed that the inflow increased by 15-20 per cent during 2004-05.

    The survey that covered hoteliers, tour operators and allied industries has shown that tourism-related sectors witnessed a growth of 15 per cent on a year-on-year basis. More than 70 per cent of the tourists were domestic, and a majority of them coming for weekends from Chennai and Bangalore.

    Though there is an increase in the number of foreign tourists, only a small percentage come to Pondicherry from Chennai. The number of foreign tourists went up to 25,559 in 2003 from 10,774 in 1992. The study predicts that the tourism industry is expected to grow by 25 per cent during 2005-06.

    Respondents were concerned at the lack of good hotels, quality rooms, beach resorts and flight connectivity.

    Though, the Tourism Department does not have any statistics about the number of tourists who visited Pondicherry in the last few months, officials are upbeat about growth, with positive feedbacks from hoteliers."Certainly there is an upswing in the number, Ankita Mishra, Director, Tourism Department told The Hindu .
